Somerset West nestles in the Helderberg Basin at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains. Somerset West is a 40 minute drive from the Cape Town city centre and a 20 minute drive from Cape Town International Airport. It is close to Strand and Gordon´s Bay. Somerset West is a bustling, close-knit community that still retains the historic charm of the Cape. Bargain hunting and meeting the locals can be done amongst the 200 stalls of Country Craft Market (Saturday mornings) or at the regular Helderberg Veldwinkel.
Walk in the Helderberg Nature Reserve and learn about our indigenous mountain fynbos. Challenge yourself on the Erinvale Golf Course - host to the World Cup of Golf in 1996 - or on the Somerset West Country Club course. Enjoy the many estates of the Helderberg Wine Route, visit Somerset Mall - one of the largest malls in the Cape, or have a meal at one of the many excellent restaurants.
Somerset West has a variety of accommodation options which include hotels, guesthouses, self-catering units and bed and breakfast establishments. There are also a number of conference venues available.
A popular Christmas tradition that has been held annually for the past 20 years at Vergelegen is "Candles By Candelight". Visitors are invited to bring a picnic basket, blanket and torch and celebrate the joy of Christmas with family and friends on the sprawling lawns of this magnificent wine farm.
Another Christmas tradition, Somerset West is know for its annual display of Christmas lights along the Main Road. Every year people come from all over the country to drive slowly down the Main Road to see the brilliant display of glimmering lights, bells, angels, reindeer, candles and a lot more! The Helderberg Lights Festival (also known as the Strawberry Festival) traditionally complements these lights when the Main Road is closed off in the evening, and floats, parades and flea market stalls are lined up under the lights. A wonderful outing for the whole family!
