Close to the very tip of Africa, just outside Cape Town, you will find the Cape Whale Coast - a place on Earth where wonders never cease. This pristine stretch of the South African coastline is flanked by mesmerizing mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The main towns of the area are Kleinmond, Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai; but the Whale Coast is in fact made up of a collection of villages, farms, rivers, bays, coves and valleys - each filled with its own special magic.
Within the Cape Whale Coast area you will discover the wild flowers as you experience the area’s winter floral displays. These floral jewels embrace mountains, valleys and coastal areas. The Cape Whale Coast is home to an immense diversity of wild flowers and Fynbos, many which are unique to the region. As you drive over the Hottentots-Holland Mountains from the Cape Peninsula, the tranquility almost becomes tangible. The Whale Coast has an ethereal quality which is perhaps why so many artists have made it their home.

Walks in the mountains, kloofs and along the coastal plains of the Cape Whale Coast are mesmerizing. The area is covered with the largest variety of Fynbos (protea floral kingdom) on earth. Coupled with the magnificent vistas and overwhelming skies you never seem to be able to absorb it all, but always come away feeling renewed and more aware of the magnificence of planet earth.
Bontebok National Park near Swellendam and De Hoop Nature Reserve near Waenhuiskrans/Arniston provide a refuge for one of the rarest antelope species in southern Africa - the Bontebok. Cape mountain zebra, red hartebeest, eland and smaller antelope species are also found here. Shy, nocturnal leopards are rare, but individuals are still found in mountainous areas.
Hermanus, situated along the Cape Whale Coast, is hailed as offering the best land based whale watching in the world. From May onwards Southern Right Whales pay homage to these warm, shallow waters in order to calf their young and to mate. The best time for whale watching is between August and November when the bay is dotted with whales. More often than not, they're quite happy to put on a performance.
