Have some fun in the sun on one of the pristine beaches, beautiful nature reserves or other peaceful hot spots.
This untouched haven of mountains, ocean, rivers and spectacular nature is a perfect holiday destination for those who travel, and a sanctuary loved by those who live here. There are no cities in the Overberg - the region is dotted with villages and towns filled with character and hospitable locals. As you drive over the Hottentots-Holland mountains from the Cape Peninsula, the tranquility almost becomes tangible. The Overberg has an ethereal quality which is perhaps why so many artists have made it their home.
The Overberg´s beautiful pristine beaches offer swimming, surfing or just sunbathing. But our summers are more than just sun, sea and sand. We offer good food, served with a chilled glass of Overberg wine while admiring stunning sunsets. The Overberg offers a wide range of activities and scenic pleasures. Whether you're looking to unwind or have fun; recuperate or invigorate - you can do it here - in paradise.
Walks in the mountains, kloofs and along the coastal plains of the Overberg are mesmerizing. The area is covered with the largest variety of Fynbos (protea floral kingdom) on earth. Coupled with the magnificent vistas and overwhelming skies you never seem to be able to absorb it all, but always come away feeling renewed and more aware of the magnificence of planet earth.
Bontebok National Park near Swellendam and De Hoop Nature Reserve near Waenhuiskrans/Arniston provide a refuge for one of the rarest antelope species in southern Africa - the bontebok. Cape mountain zebra, red hartebeest, eland and smaller antelope species are also found here. Shy, nocturnal leopards are rare, but individuals are still found in mountainous areas.
Hermanus, situated along the Overberg coast, is hailed as offering the best land based whale watching in the world. From May onwards Southern Right Whales pay homage to these warm, shallow waters in order to calf their young and to mate. The best time for whale watching is between August and November and at this time the bay is dotted with whales. More often than not, they're more than happy to put on a performance.
