GUIDE TO THE CAPE WEST COAST

Cape West Coast Fishing BoatsThe coastal region is renowned for its 16 Mile Beach at Yzerfontein, the popular West Coast National Park and Langebaan Lagoon, while its inland attractions such as satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys’ “Evita’s Perron” at Darling, wine farms of the Swartland and Sandveld, the spectacular magnificence of the scenic Cedarberg and Groot Winterhoek mountains and the arid beauty of Namaqualand and the Knersvlakte, add diversity to the region...

To the west the region borders on the Atlantic Ocean and where the ocean washes the shores, a kaleidoscope unfolds to satisfy the whims of nature’s children. In early spring a paradise of white arum lilies sweep the natural folds of hills and gentle breezes move softly through fields of daisies, as "Bokbaai vygies" from a sea of color contrasting with the blue of the ocean.

The scenic beauty of this solitary coast is complemented by its plentiful sea life, with dishes like mussels, crayfish or line fish pulled from the cold water of the Benguela Current, offering the visitor a rich and unique culinary experience. Migrating whales visit the coastal waters from July to December and heavyside dolphins are often sighted. The region is also a bird watcher’s paradise as bird life abounds and travelling waders, seabirds and birds of prey are just part of the variety offered by this beautiful region of the Cape.

The Cederberg Wilderness, 71 000 hectares of mountainous terrain that runs almost north to south from Clanwilliam to Citrusdal, is renowned for its stark, rugged beauty, whilst gentle walks in the Cederberg when spring transforms the landscape into a carpet of yellow, orange and purple, will not fail to bring you closer to the natural rhythms of a world where fynbos, succulents and wide open skies couldn’t be more remote from city living. The Mediterranean climate promises long, sun-drenched summer days, green winters and in spring time, fields of indigenous flowers fed by cool ocean mists.
